Moving a WordPress site with no data loss: the method

Changing host can be scary, but a well-prepared migration happens with no loss and almost no downtime.

1. What to retrieve

  • The database (a .sql file): it holds your pages, posts, settings and accounts.
  • The wp-content folder: your images, themes and plugins.
  • Access to your domain name management (DNS zone).

2. Install the site at the new host

WordPress is installed, the database and the wp-content folder are imported, then the old website address is replaced by the new one throughout the database. At this stage the old site still works: your visitors see nothing.

3. Check before switching

Pages, images, forms and the admin login are checked on the new server before anything changes for the public.

4. Switch the domain name

The DNS zone is changed to point the domain to the new host. The HTTPS certificate is obtained right after. For a few hours, some visitors still see the old site: that is why you avoid publishing during the switch.

5. Keep the old hosting for a few days

Do not cancel the old hosting right away: it is a safety net while everything is checked.
